Apple's Aperture 2 is a piece of software for organising and editing your photographs. Offering a wealth of tools, Aperture allows you to manage your images and keep them organised; it then gives you methods of sorting and arranging them and of finding specific images both quickly and easily. And unless you are heavily into using layers, quickmasks and photomontage, Aperture probably has all the editing tools you will ever need. And all of this at a very reasonable price.

You can learn a lot more about Aperture at the Apple Website and there, you can also see how real people have put the programme to use.

Basically, yes - they both do much the same thing. I use and love Aperture - have no experience of Lightroom though I have heard very good reports about it and have considered buying it.
